Heat the water in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling. Add the chai tea bags and cinnamon sticks, then steep for 5–7 minutes. Remove the tea bags and cinnamon sticks.

Whisk in eggnog, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract if using. Warm the mixture gently, making sure it does not boil.

Pour the mixture into mugs. Top with whipped cream and a light dusting of ground nutmeg or cinnamon if desired.
