Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish and lay bread slices in one layer.

Mix eggs, half-and-half, milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl until smooth.

Pour mixture over the bread, making sure each slice gets well-soaked.

Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit in the fridge overnight.

Next morning, heat oven to 350°F.

Take off plastic wrap and put small pieces of butter on the bread. Sprinkle some sugar over the top.
