John Wayne Layered Casserole (Print)

Hearty Southwestern casserole with seasoned beef, vegetables, and creamy cheese topping on a homemade Bisquick crust.

# Ingredients:

→ Dough Base

01 - 480 ml Bisquick baking mix
02 - 360 ml water, divided

→ Filling

03 - 900 g ground beef
04 - 28 g taco seasoning
05 - 160 g onion, diced
06 - 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced

→ Cream Mixture

07 - 120 ml mayonnaise
08 - 120 ml sour cream
09 - 90 g Mexican blend cheese, shredded

→ Toppings

10 - 3 Roma tomatoes, sliced
11 - 60 g pepperoncini, sliced
12 - 180 g Mexican blend cheese, shredded

# Directions:

01 - Set oven to 165°C and position the rack in the center. Grease a 33x23 cm baking dish with nonstick spray.
02 - Heat a large skillet over medium high. Brown the ground beef stirring until fully cooked. Incorporate taco seasoning and 120 ml water. Simmer for 2 minutes then remove from pan.
03 - In the same skillet sauté diced onion and sliced bell pepper for 4 minutes or until softened.
04 - In a medium bowl blend mayonnaise, sour cream and 90 g of shredded Mexican cheese until smooth.
05 - Combine Bisquick mix and the remaining 240 ml water to create a soft dough. Press dough evenly into the bottom and slightly up the sides of the prepared baking dish.
06 - Distribute seasoned ground beef evenly atop the biscuit dough base.
07 - Spread sautéed onions and bell peppers over the beef layer.
08 - Evenly distribute the sour cream and cheese mixture over the vegetables.
09 - Arrange sliced Roma tomatoes and pepperoncini on top. Sprinkle with remaining 180 g of shredded Mexican cheese.
10 - Transfer dish to center rack of the oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden and bubbling.
